Federer was beaten 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 by Czech 12th seed Tomas Berdych in the quarter-finals ufffd his earliest defeat here since 2002 ufffd in one of the most unexpected upsets in the history of the grasscourt Grand Slam.
"Roger did amazingly the last seven years here, so someday this must happen and it happened today," said Nadal after his quarter-final win over Soderling.
"You know when you play against these kind of players like Berdych, they have a very good serve and very powerful shots from the baseline.
"You have the same motivation for every Grand Slam, even if you lose or you win the last Grand Slam. And Roger is always going to be a difficult opponent in every one."
And, like Nadal, Serbian third seed Djokovic has no doubts the Swiss great will still be a force to be reckoned with. "Federer is the best player that ever played this game. And to be able to keep playing well after he has won so many Grand Slams is just great. You have to give him credit for everything he has done," Djokovic said.
British fourth seed Murray added: "It's surprising. But there are so many great players around. It's tough. Guys are playing a lot better."
