After being promoted from Div II to Div I, one would have expected OLPS (Chembur) to prepare well for their tough challlenge this season. Unfortunately their preparations have been hampered by their school's preference to persist without a coach again this year. But that didn't stop the Div II champions from winning their season-opener of the U-16 MSSA Super League against St Mary's (Mazagaon) at Azad Maidan yesterday.
But even as OLPS emerged 2-0 victors, their physical education instructor Ram Das refused to give reasons for the absence of a coach. "We have not had a coach for the last two years. These things are dealt with by the school management, so I don't now why there's no coach," he told MiD DAY. Meanwhile, one of the school's ex-students, Derrick Joseph has stepped in to train the team. "I asked the school authorities if I could help the team and I'm glad they have allowed me to do so," said Joseph.
Yash Mhatre and Akash Bhandari, scored a goal each for OLPS, after which Mhatre admitted that a coach would do wonders.
"We definitely miss a permanent coach. But for now, Derrick's a great help," he said.
