Determined to avoid any dope-related controversy, some senior weightlifters have decided to conduct their very own 'personalised' seminars with teammates.
Veteran lifters Sanamacha Chanu and Monika Devi, who have served dope bans, told MiD DAY that they are continuously educating their colleagues about the ill-effects of dope by citing their own example.

"I explain to the girls that doping is a curse for any sportsperson. It may bring short-term results but in the long run, it can destroy your life.
The girls are like my sisters and some even call me didi," said Chanu who served a two-year ban after testing positive for a banned substance at the 2004 Athens Olympics. Monika Devi, who flunked a dope test just before the 2008 Beijing Olympics which resulted in a two-year ban, said the girls are very responsive.
"They are eager to do well for the country, so when I'm talking to them, they listen patiently and understand that I'm speaking through experience," said Monika.
Since most of the girls hail from the North East just like Chanu and Monika, it is an added bonus. "Since we all speak the same language, communication is easy too," said Chanu.
With some invaluable tips from those who have been there and done that, let's hope there's no scope for dope in Indian weightlifting from now on.
