Striker Gurjit Kaur led the charge with a hat-trick as title contenders India thrashed Indonesia 8-0 in their opening match of the women's hockey competition here yesterday. Incredibly, India led 6-0 at half time. The goal scorers were Gurjit Kaur, Vandana Katariya, Navnet Kaur and Udita.

India started in a whirlwind fashion, taking a 2-0 lead in the first quarter through Udita and Vandana Katariya respectively. They pumped in four more in the second quarter with Gurjeet Kaur converting two penalty corners, Navneet and Vandana chipping in one each to make it 6-0 halfway through the match. But the next 30-minutes exposed the Indians' vulnerability to cut through the crowded defence to score.
