Despite announcing retirement from the One-Day Internationals this year, Australia's <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/sports/cricket/photo/revisiting-greatest-odi-knock-glenn-maxwells-unbeaten-201-vs-afghanistan-102882/1" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Glenn Maxwell</a> is all set to feature in the 50-over match for his state, Victoria.
He has been included in Victoria's 14-member squad for their two Dean Jones Trophy matches against Queensland and Tasmania, respectively. The matches have been scheduled at Allan Border Field on Wednesday and Friday.
This will also serve as the preparatory matches for the upcoming T20I series against <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/sports/cricket/article/india-to-play-warmups-against-england-nz-ahead-of-womens-world-cup-23584826" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">New Zealand</a>.
So far, since 2022, Maxwell has played just one List A match for Victoria, which was against New South Wales in October last year.
Fellow Australian T20I squad member Matt Short also returns, set to play his first game in any format since the Major League Cricket (MLC) in July. Short had missed the T20I tour of the Caribbean as well as the home series against South Africa due to a side strain. Like Maxwell, he hasn't played a 50-over fixture since the Champions Trophy.
Will Sutherland has been appointed to lead Victoria in the first, before he leaves for India to join the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/sports/cricket/article/we-have-improved-a-lot-can-defeat-aus-india-skipper-kaur-23593914" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Australia</a> 'A'. India 'A' and Australia 'A' are set to clash against each other for the four-day match in Lucknow. After his departure, Peter Handscomb will take over the captaincy duties for the second match.
On the other hand, Marnus Labuschagne will lead Queensland in their matches against Victoria on Wednesday, followed by Western Australia on Sunday.
However, their squad will be missing the likes of Xavier Bartlett is on Australia A duty, while Mark Steketee (hamstring) and Callum Vidler (stress fracture) are sidelined. <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/sports/cricket/article/wtc-final-usman-khawaja-registers-unwanted-record-after-early-dismissal-against-sa-23565768" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Usman Khawaja</a> has also opted out of both matches to prepare for the Sheffield Shield and the Ashes.
Queensland could hand debuts to former New South Wales all-rounder Hayden Kerr and former Under-19 World Cup-winning skipper Hugh Weibgen.
