Pakistan yesterday restored permission for Shahid Afridi to play abroad, allowing him to join England's T20 competition and ending a damaging row.

The announcement came after Afridi halted legal proceedings and appeared before a three-man disciplinary committee, where he said he had been forced into making a mistake. "The committee unanimously decided to fine him 4.5 million rupees for various breaches of the code of conduct," said PCB legal adviser Taffazul Rizvi.

Afridi accepted the decision. "The matter has defamed the country, so we needed to settle it," he said after the hearing. "I am thankful to the committee for understanding my point of view and I look forward to playing in England, for which I was here," he added.

Afridi said his refusal to play for Pakistan under the current PCB set-up stood. "I am in no mood to play international cricket," he said, declining to give reasons.

The stand-off began after Afridi publicly criticised coach Waqar Younis for meddling in team selection during the tour of West Indies.
