The best ever music to a race lover's ears (the sound of thundering hooves) will return to the Pune racetrack with the commencement of the 2009 monsoon racing season today.
The 29-day meet will run through 14 weeks, and conclude on Sunday, October 25. As usual, despite recession, the RWITC marketing committee headed by Vivek Jain has roped in several sponsors to make every Sunday something to look forward to. Nearly a crore of rupees have been generated in sponsorships, including media partnerships.
A whopping stakes money of Rs 6.88 crore (up by 12 per cent over last year) will urge nearly 1,000 horses in training to be at their competitive best. The three-year-old potential champs, who will be the cynosure of all eyes, have their pre-Derby prep races on the following dates: FD Wadia Trophy (Aug 9), Gen Rajendrasinhji Trophy (Aug 30) & grade 2, SA Poonawalla Multi-Million (Sept 13), while the grade 1, Nanoli Stud Pune Derby will be run Sunday, October 11.
The Indian St Leger (grade 1), shifted from Mahalaxmi to Pune this year on account of a truncated Mumbai season, will be run a week before the Derby (Sun, Oct 4), and has a new sponsor in Casino Royale, Goa.
In July, racing will be held on Thursdays and Fridays while from August, it will be held on all Saturdays and Sundays in the next three months barring a solitary Friday that is attached to the final weekend.
