Lalit Modi is ready to present himself for questioning before the authorities in the Indian High Commission in London. This was conveyed by the former IPL chief to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) a few days ago.
Yesterday, reports circulated in the media that the Regional Passport Office in Mumbai had issued a show cause notice to Modi. However, Mehmud Abdi, lawyer of Modi, denied these reports, upholding that his client was constantly in touch with the ED.
"A few days back he told the ED that he was willing to meet the authorities in London. Right now, he is not in a position to return to the country," Abdi told MiD DAY. "On Tuesday, Mr Modi replied to ED's show cause notice, we expect ED to decide about our reply to their notice first.
"Suspension of someone's passport puts personal liberty at stake. To hold a passport comes under the category of fundamental rights. Thus, legal discretion is required to be used judicially. Reports about his passport being revoked are blatantly untrue.
Each summon by ED has been timely responded to. All documents and explanations called for have been provided. He will continue to remain in touch with ED officials.
His not being personally present is account of grave threat to his life, a fact that is well within the knowledge of agencies and the police," Abdi concluded.
