Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has insisted that a strong start to the new season is vital if the Merseyside club are going to compete for the Premier League title.

The 2011-12 fixtures were announced yesterday, and Liverpool welcome Sunderland to Anfield in their opening game, a clash which could see new signing Jordan Henderson make his competitive debut against his former club.
"It's important to hit the ground running if you want to compete for the title. You can't afford any slip-ups early on," said Steven Gerrard.
