President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he would seek to impose voter identification requirements for the November midterm elections, whether Congress approves them or not, raising the prospect of executive action on an issue traditionally overseen by states.

Trump said he plans to issue an executive order mandating voter identification, but did not detail the legal basis for such a move. “The Democrats refuse to vote for Voter ID, or Citizenship. The reason is simple — They want to continue to cheat in Elections. This was not what our Founders desired. I have searched the depths of Legal Arguments not yet articulated or vetted on this subject, and will be presenting an irrefutable one in the very near future!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
