As Prince William streaked to his fourth goal in the final, key game of the Foundation Polo Challenge in Santa Barbara, a good natured question had to be asked was the fix in?
The prince led his team to victory and accepted the winning trophy and a kiss from wife Kate
Suddenly his opposing Audi teammates seemed unable to control the Duke of Cambridge, who looked like the Michael Jordan of polo players in the pivotal game.
In the end, even the public address announcer had to point out the "storybook ending" of the prince leading his team to victory and accepting the winning trophy from his wife Catherine no less.
William's teammate Andy Busch insisted that the game was played on the level. "People may think it, but it was absolutely not fixed," he said. "Audi was out to win that game, but our team had things go our way."
Not fair on Prince
Wesly Ru, who was assigned the task of covering William for Audi, refused to even consider the prospect that his team folded to let the prince win.
"No, no, no, absolutely not," said Ru. "It wouldn't be fair to the prince to do that. He's a competitive polo player. Once you're out there it doesn't matter where you're from."
Ru said he thought the prince would be rusty since he hasn't played polo for a while. "But he didn't miss. He played hard and hit the ball hard," Ru said. "He was my guy to cover, I won't be able to live this down."
'The sport wins'
But opposing Audi team player Scott Devon was a little more circumspect.
"We played to win," he said. "But sometimes you win by losing. If you help the sport of polo, the sport wins. We just happened to lose."
Indeed, Prince William was the star player with the result and a new group of Americans were introduced to the Sport of Kings.
"It was an incredible game," said actress Jennifer Love Hewitt as she walked off the field. She added jokingly, "After today, I'm hoping to become a polo player."
