A 16-year-old boy has pleaded guilty to the murder of Indian accountancy graduate Nitin Garg in Melbourne last year.

Twenty-one-year-old Garg was stabbed to death in Cruikshank Park, Yarraville, in January 2010.

He was walking to his place of work at Hungry Jack's when the teenager and a friend approached him and demanded that he hand over his phone.

The boy, who cannot be named, pleaded guilty before the Supreme Court to charges of murder and attempted armed robbery, The Age reports.

The court heard that the teenager had a knife in his pants, and when Garg refused to hand over his phone, he was stabbed.

The teenager's friend was sentenced to 18 months probation last year after agreeing to testify against the murderer.

The 16-year-old will now appear for a plea hearing in June.

Garg's murder sparked off an extraordinary outcry, with claims that Indian students in Australia were being targeted in racial attacks.

It led to protests in both Melbourne and Sydney.
