At least nine people were killed and over a dozen injured in an apparent suicide bombing outside a hotel in Rawalpindi Monday evening, Geo TV reported.

The blast occurred near Pir Wadhai Chowk at Ghousia Adda area on the outskirts of Rawalpindi, according to the police.

TV grabs showed a number of cars and roadside stalls destroyed in the explosion in the garrison city.

At least 15 people were injured in the attack, Rawalpindi police chief Nasir Khan Durrani said. The blast appeared to be a suicide car bomb attack, he added.

The blast comes on the day when a major opposition march was called off after the government announced the reinstatement of deposed judges, including Supreme Court chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.

No group claimed responsibility for the blast immediately.

Rescue work at the scene was under way.
