The mayor of the Lithuanian capital Vilnius has taken his frustration over motorists parking in bicycle lanes into his own hands by driving an armoured personnel carrier over a Mercedes.

Residents are reportedly tired of luxury car owners parking with impunity and have requested the local council do something about it.

"I wanted to send a message" Zuokas told the media.

"I want to point out that if you have a car and more money it doesn't mean that you can park it everywhere. Recently there's been an increase in this type of parking violations, and it shows a lack of respect for others".

On his Facebook page, he defended the decision to use an armoured personnel carrier to deal with errant motorists, "This week, a lot of stories about a place of luxury cars parked. This morning I had to remind one of a few rules :-)"

The shocked owner of the Mercedes was photographed exiting a shop to find his car destroyed.
