Thousands of Kenyan women are to go on a week-long sex strike in a bid to force an end to the country's ongoing political bickering.

The move will attempt to succeed where other peace-building measures have failed to end months of deadlock which threaten to plunge the country into another explosive crisis.

No hookers too

It was announced by the Women's Development Organisation, which plans to approach the wives of both President Mwai Kibaki and Raila Odinga, the prime minister, to take part.

The group will also pay prostitutes not to work.

The organisation's chairman, Rukia Subow, said that she hopes that the boycott will put pressure on men to persuade politicians and their supporters to speed up efforts to break the deadlock.

"We have looked at all issues which can bring people to talk and we have seen that sex is the answer," said Subow. "It does not know tribe, it does not have a [political] party and it happens in the lowest households."

Allies of both Kibaki and Odinga have accused their opponents of political infighting over the spoils of last year's post-election power sharing agreement.

The deal brought an end to six weeks of violence in which 1,500 people were killed and 3 lakh forced from their homes after a disputed election.

There are fears that the fragile coalition is on the verge of collapse, while fresh elections could plunge the country back into bloodshed, diplomats in Nairobi have warned.
