Holder's nomination was approved by the US Senate yesterday by 75 votes to 21. He had earlier served as Deputy Attorney General under Clinton Administration.
Speaking on the occasion, Holder asserted that there would be no political favouritism as long as he heads the Department of Justice and professionals would be given their due position.
"I am determined to ensure there shall be a new day for the dedicated career professionals I am once again so honored to call my colleagues," he said, promising a break from the policies of the Bush Administration, which was marked with scandals over political and motivated hiring and firings.
"There shall be no place for political favouritism, no reason to be timid in enforcing the laws that protect our rights, our environment and our principles, as long as I have the opportunity to lead this great Department," he said.
Biden said the Attorney General understands the most important truth about this office: "Not only is the Attorney General the President's lawyer, but he is the people's lawyer.
And that is as it should be as well." With the appointment of Holder as Attorney General, Biden said: "We're going to be returning to a standard that has governed this great department at its greatest moments, in my view. No politics; no ideology."
