The Greek navy says the crew of a Norwegian cargo ship have fought off Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden.

Navy spokesman Andreas Vettos says pirates fired gunshots at the Sigloo Tor from their speedboat but the crew fought them off with jets of water from fire hoses.

Vettos said nobody was injured in the attack on Wednesday morning.

Commandos from a Greek frigate patrolling the pirate-infested waters detained five Somalis in the area soon afterward.

No evidence was found of their involvement in the attack and they were released. A navy statement said the men may have thrown their arms overboard to avoid arrest.

The Gulf of Aden, between Somalia and Yemen, is one of the world's busiest waterways.
