Britain's young offenders committed the equivalent of one crime every two minutes last year, new figures show.

A report from the Youth Justice Board disclosed that youngsters aged 10 to 17 carried out 2,77,986 offences in the past 12 months.

The research showed that 53,930 10- to 17-year-olds were convicted of violence last year, compared with 44,998 in 2004/05.

There were also increases in public order offences, theft and handling, and criminal damage crimes among young people.

The report identified a surge in the number of "ladette" offenders, as crimes committed by young women increased by 10 per cent to 57,962.
