Twelve people were killed in an explosion at a factory in the Philippine capital and one is missing, feared dead, police said on Wednesday.

Six other people were injured in the explosion at the Styrofoam Packaging Corp late yesterday, said Senior Superintendent Marcos Rivero.

A police report said the blast, which caused the building to collapse, burying many workers, was caused by an overheated tank connected to a steam boiler.

Police earlier said the rescue efforts were hampered by a lack of proper equipment and a power outage caused by the explosion.
