There have been an increasing number of applications for re-evaluation at Mumbai University, once again raising questions about the quality of assessment. In May 2019, a total of 69,802 applications were received by the University, as against 42,205 in October 2018. This substantial jump was highlighted in a report in this paper.

In October 2018, 13,168 papers were cleared after re-evaluation. This information was revealed through a Right to Information (RTI) query.

The spike in re-evaluation applications is disturbing, as it puts a big question mark over the quality of assessment. Those in the know say that over 30 per cent of students will pass after re-evaluation. The University earns substantially in the process.

While one can understand that not every student will be content with his/her marks, these many applications mean this could be a big cause for worry. Why are there so many students having problems with how their papers have been evaluated?

Most of these applications will be from those who have serious issues with the way they have been marked in the papers. This is because in asking for re-evaluation, students are spending money and losing time. The University needs to introspect and bring the number of re-evaluations down. It could consider examining papers which were re-evaluated in the previous years. This could be a starting point to asses where, if at all, evaluators are going wrong and what they must do to ensure that students are marked justly, fairly and correctly. And re-evaluation eventually becomes not just negligible but practically non-existent. Try to bring those numbers down, Mumbai University. A graph decline in this case is fine.
