Congress leader Sonia Gandhi visited the CPI(M) headquarters to pay her last respects. Despite political differences, Gandhi had a close relationship with Yechury, dating back to 2004 when she chose Dr Manmohan Singh as prime minister.

Leaders from various political parties, including AAP’s Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh, NCP`s Sharad Pawar, and RJD’s Manoj Jha, paid tribute to Yechury at the party office.

Sitaram Yechury passed away on Thursday after battling a severe lung infection. He was 72 years old and had been admitted to AIIMS in Delhi on 19 August, where he remained in critical condition.

Yechury’s body was taken to Jawaharlal Nehru University, where students and faculty members paid their respects. He was a prominent student leader at JNU, serving as the president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students` Union (JNUSU) three times.

BJP president JP Nadda paid his last respects to Yechury at his residence, placing a wreath on behalf of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to honour the Marxist leader’s contributions.

Later in the day, Yechury’s body was to be taken to AIIMS and donated for research, in line with his wishes.

Yechury is survived by his wife Seema Chishti and two children, Akhila and Danish. His elder son, Ashish Yechury, tragically passed away in 2021 due to Covid-19.
