As Maharashtra battles a surge in coronavirus cases, 229 students and 3 staffers in a residential school hostel in Washim district tested positive for COVID-19. The school premises have been declared as a containment zone.

The cases have been reported from the residential school-cum-hostel at Degaon village in Risod tehsil, sending shockwaves in district health circles.
Washim Collector Shanmugarajan S. rushed to the site on Wednesday night to review the situation with the school and local authorities, the containment measures taken and other precautions to prevent further spread among the student-teacher community and others in the village.
A total of 327 students from Amravati, Hingoli, Nanded, Washim, Buldhana and Akola reside in this hostel, according to ANI.
On Wednesday, Maharashtra reported 8,807 new infections, taking its total count to 21,21,119.
With 80 new fatalities being reported during the day, the state's death toll rose to 51,937.
The increase in cases was steep considering that on Tuesday, the state had reported 6,218 new COVID-19 cases.
Of 80 deaths, 27 took place in the past 48 hours, while 22 were from the last week. The remaining 31 deaths were from the period before that, officials said.
As many as 2,772 patients were discharged from hospitals on Wednesday, taking the total of recoveries to 20,08,623.
