The Delhi High Court sought the Centre's stand on Tuesday on a petition against solitary confinement of prison inmates. A bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramonium Prasad issued a notice on the public interest litigation (PIL) matter filed by lawyer Harsh Vibhore Singhal and granted six weeks' time to the Centre's counsel to seek instructions.

The petition has challenged several provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Prisons Act relating to solitary confinement of prisoners on the ground that those are in violation of the Constitution.
