The Congress Party has launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led central government over its proposed Transgender Persons Amendment Bill, describing it as a “regressive” move that undermines the constitutional rights of transgender persons in India.
In a strongly worded statement, the party alleged that the bill seeks to strip transgender individuals of their right to self-identify, a principle upheld by the NALSA v. Union of India judgment of the Supreme Court of India. According to Congress, this move directly contradicts legal protections granted by the apex court.
