Trees axed for hoarding

An advertising agency chopped three trees in Koregaon Park so that a hoarding could be visible to commuters. Residents at Lane No 6 in Koregaon Park came out in protest and forced the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to take action.

Balasaheb Dolas, horticulture inspector, garden department said: "The issue was raised by the local people and we have sent a notice to the concerned company. Under the Tree Act of 1975, this is a cognizable offence and we can take legal action as per the rules," said Dolas.

Raju Sontakke, a local shop owner, who witnessed the incident said: "We tried to stop the people who were cutting the trees, but we were not sure if they had sought permission from the PMC."

Neelesh Dive, a resident, said: "The trees were chopped and it is shocking. Something needs to be done to stop the illegal cutting of trees."
