The GUIDE suggests you catch the dance ballet titled, To Simply Be, and get a lesson on how to set yourself free from the pressures of society

The majority of us find it necessary to spend our lives behind masks. To go through life in a disguise, convincing oneself that this illusion of the self is sincerely who he or she is, is how Hrishikesh Pawar explains his forthcoming ballet ufffd To Simply Be.

Exploring the theme of individuality and freedom of self is the aim of Hrishikesh's Centre of Contemporary Dance.

Their modern ballet works on the basic premise that everyone is unique and will be showcased for the fist time in the city. "I normally take concepts that are society-driven or something that I've come across through my experiences," he explained. "This ballet is about people who define our simplicity. In today's society, it's not easy being simple and the ballet is driven by this fact."u00a0 Elaborating on the theme, Pawar states that, "It's about an individual's ability to sense and react to one's inner self and to set oneself free from the pressures and expectations of society. This piece is a combination of solos, duets and triads and emphasises on the individuality of movement and unique interpretation of music and space."

He admits that while contemporary dance styles used to attract very few people earlier, the scene is changing today. "It took me three years to get an audience! The first time we performed we had an audience of just two people," he reminisces. His school of contemporary dance is involved in making this dance form popular all around Maharashtra. They are also working with kids in the red light area so that they can take it up as a career option later on in life.

"The biggest challenge in today's society is to be yourself and survive. To follow your voice and be heard, to blind yourself from the outside and yet be noticed," adds Pawar. Also, watch out for their soon-to-be launched calendar titled Love in Dark Times where 12 dancers will be showcased over 12 months.

On December 22, 7 pm onwards
At Yashada Auditorium, Baner Road.
