Three held for forging report on banned drug

Cleared syrup, which was banned three years ago, by fabricating original report to give positive opinion thereby allowing drug to be sold for human consumptionu00a0 Three officials of the state drug control department are in the dock for forging a report on a banned drug to facilitate its sale. Though Deputy Drug Control of the department banned the drug in September 2008, reports were forged stating the drug was fit for sale and the same is still being sold across the state. The Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement (DCRE), which investigated the case found that a government examiner along with the section head of the state drug control department have not only forged the report and facilitated marketing of the drugs, but also put the health of the general public at risk. Superintendent of Police, DCRE, who investigated the case, filed a case with the High Grounds police against examiner Mohan, Section Superintendent Shailavathy and a chemist for involvement in the scam.ExposedThe scam came to light when DCRE received a complaint that a government medical store in Raichur was supplyingu00a0 Alcolyte syrup (Batch. no. abl 020), despite it being banned.A detailed verification of documents available with the medical store revealed that the report was acquired from the department mentioning that the drug was fit for use.Ironically, Deputy Drug Control of the department, S B Jayaram had examined the drug following a complaint and banned the same in September 2008, stating that the syrup contained particles, which were not suitable for human consumption.Still on shelvesA close examination of both the reports revealed that the accused have fabricated the original report giving positive opinion and allowing the drug for consumption. The enforcement officials sensed large scale corruption since the syrup, despite being banned is still in the market. State drug controller Dr B R Jagashetty informed that even the department has conducted an enquiry and submitted a report against Mohan and others.u00a0Refusing to comment further on this, he said that the report is pending and the government is yet to take action in this regard.
