Three children die as mother drowns them

Three children drowned on Monday when their mother jumped in a well with them to allegedly commit suicide after going hungry for seven days at a village in Bokaro district of Jharkhand.

"Thirty-four-year-old Laxmi Devi, a resident of Harlagora village, lost her two daughters aged 8 and 5 and six-month-old son this afternoon after she jumped into the well," Superintendent of Police Saket Kumar Singh said.

She attempted to commit suicide as she had nothing to feed her children for last one week, the police said. Feeling humiliated, she decided to end life with her children, Singh said.

"The villagers rescued Laxmi Devi but the children drowned. The bodies were fished out of the well," he said. Singh said her husband was jobless and they were living in extreme poverty.
