Cops deny raped constable tried to kill self; inquiry report likely today

A day before the police were expected to submit the inquiry report in the Kolhapur police training school sex scandal, rumours were doing the rounds yesterday that the victim had tried to commit suicide in Nagpur. But investigative officer Additional Commissioner of Police (Nashik region) Maithili Zaa denied there had been a suicide bid.

Testing times: Labour Minister Hasan Mushrif has said that there is a
concern among many people that investigating officer Maithili Zaa

Yadav, accused of shielding officers, is an IPS batchmate. File pic

Zaa is expected to submit the inquiry report to DGP Ajit Parasnis today. People who visited the victim's home after hearing about the alleged suicide attempt also said the news of attempted suicide was baseless. "The woman constable is in good health and she's in constant touch with her family," said a relative, requesting anonymity.

Labour Minister Hasan Mushrif, who was in Kolhapur yesterday, said, "Since Zaa and former Kolhapur superintendent of police Yashasvi Yadav are from the same IPS batch, doubts are being raised on whether Zaa will be able to probe this case properly as it involves another officer from her cadre."

He added Zaa must also take into consideration what MP Sadashiv Mandlik has to say about 11 policewomen having become pregnant. Zaa has said before that only two constables had become pregnant. The lid had been blown off the sex scandal when the victim, who had been undergoing training at the police training school in Kolhapur, filed a complaint of rape. Acting on her complaint, the police arrested drill instructor Yuvraj Kamble, who was attached to the training centre.

Kamble told the investigating officers that two senior officers -- PI Dnayeshwar Munde and DYSP (Home) Vijay Parkale -- were also involved in the scandal. The two was suspended while their boss Yadav was transferred to Amravati for failing to rein in his subordinates. The initial action was taken after Zaa submitted her primary findings to CM Prithiviraj Chavan.
