The directorate of technical education has added to the existing perplexity at the state education department by announcing the annual timetable for the diploma exams without verifying the dates.

The exam schedule for next week has several papers overlapping, thereby creating confusion among students.

"I will have to sit for the carry over exam from my previous semester and cannot answer both, as they fall on the same day and same time," said Mahesh Rao, a student.

Students lament this sheer negligence on the part of the board and rue that the authorities should have at least checked a calendar before setting the timetable.

An official of the college management said, "While the board itself has given the option of carryover scheme to students, it had set an unscientific timetable, thereby creating confusion."

Students allege that when the issue was brought to the notice of the board, they were asked to drop one paper so as to avoid confusion. They believe that following board's advice is not the solution to the problem.

"What if a student cannot pass the paper pending from the previous semester? Students are in distress, as they are unable to get a satisfactory reply for the board's mistake," he added.

Meanwhile, Joint Director of the Board of Technical Education Anand Poojary justified the schedule.

"It was set according to government rules. We have asked students to attempt just one paper to avoid confusion.

They need to clear their first semester papers as per the carryover rules before going to the third semester and likewise. There is no sense in studying for the third semester if students don't clear the first year papers," he said.

Officials of a city college said instead of solving the problem, the board was asking colleges to go ahead with the timetable.

"This would result in great injustice with diploma students who have many subjects to clear from their previous semester. This wrong time table would cause the students to lose one year," said an official from the management.

Scrap system
While the management of another city college said that the board should scrap the carryover system once and for all.

"We will bring the issue to the notice of V S Acharya, minister of higher education, for redressal as the board members are shying away from their responsibilities," said a member of college board.
