School students get safe roof over their heads

Students of Mumbai Public School will be shifted to a safer building after their building at BPT colony was declared unsafe; meanwhile repairs will be carried out

Parents of students studying in the Mumbai Public School at Bombay Port Trust (BPT) can finally heave a sigh of relief, as the children will be soon shifted to a school building in Tadwadi near Mazgaon Court. In February, MiD DAY had reported that the school, where about 190 students study, was in a dilapidated condition leaving their lives in danger (‘School remains under lock and key to ward off junkies’, February 16).

An official from the school on condition of anonymity said, “Authorities knew that the school’s building was in a dilapidated condition.

They allotted funds for repair but haven’t repaired it yet. Now finally they have given an order to shift the students to other school building. If the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) continue to ignore the school building issue then we may lose out on admissions.”

The school runs a junior kindergarten section from 1.30 pm to 5.30 pm and classes for Marathi medium students from Std II to V on the first floor and ground floor of the building. Some school authorities had told MiD DAY that they feared that the condition of the school’s ceiling was not healthy and seemed unsafe and thus followed up with the BMC to get an alternate location. About 157 students study in the Marathi medium section and 32 students study in the English medium.u00a0

Deo Charate, deputy education officer, BMC, said, “We have given an order that the school students be shifted to Tadwadi area’s BMC school so that we can renovate the school building.” ‘

However, according to officials from BPT, BMC has run out of lease for the building and they were supposed to vacate the school. u00a0
