The Lokayukta police, in a joint operation with the forest department, raided the official residence of former Shimoga Superintendent of Police S Murugan on Wednesday and recovered 126 cubic feet of illegal teak wood worth 3 lakh.
Upon verification, the officials discovered that Murugan did not have a permit to store the timber. However, he claimed that he possessed documents indicating that he had purchased it from a timer merchant. He added that he had stored the teakwood to use for his house, which is under construction.
"We have taken up a case against him under the Forest Act and would proceed only after verifying the records submitted by him," said a forest official.
Meanwhile, the state home department has initiated no action so far. DG&IGP, S T Ramesh said that the department neither has information, nor any proper report to consider taking action. "We are waiting for the report from the authority concerned to take the next course of action," he added.
Murugan shot to fame a few years ago for gunning down two women naxal leaders and had managed to contain the naxal menace successfully. Due to his abilities, his transfer was cancelled on two earlier occasions. He was to assume office as DIG (economic offences) in the CID department in Bangalore when the raid occurred.
