It was the setting for the film that became the iconic depiction of Delhi's ugly property disputes and real estate con jobs.u00a0
However, the house in north Delhi's Civil Lines where a real-life property drama is unfolding, continues to court trouble. IAS officer Brij Raj Bahadur's pristine bungalowu00a0- 14 Jamuna Roadu00a0- is still struggling trespass, threats, breaking down a boundary wall, flashing axes and rods one year on.
MiD DAY had first reported the travails of the 81-year-old Bahadur in December last year. He revealed that the condition has only worsened with time.
The Bahadur family allege that the property dealer Pradeep Garg who bought the neighbouring plot of land from one of Bahadur's relatives has bribed the local people who have started harassing them by making their house a public road and making public enter their house.
"The washerman and the security guard of our locality allow people to enter our house and throw garbage in our compound. They also cut branches of trees in our compound," Bahadur told MiD DAY.
"My family is living in this locality for the last 500 years and all the bungalows around our house are owned by our relatives. We had created the service lane to facilitate meeting each other, but after the Gargs broke the wall and mounted a gate there they have started entering my compound," he said.
He added that no government report or map of the locality mentions a lane. "It has always been a part of my property. No government map says that there was a lane between the two houses."
Bahadur's daughter Rachna is handling the legal battle. "Police are not doing anything to help us out in re-building the wall that was broken by Garg. We have approached the local cops many times but return empty-handed. That too when my father is registered under senior citizen cell," she said.
In a 1982 letter to Bahadur, Skipper Constructions (who were owners of property at 10 Jamuna Road before the Gargs) mentions "the traffic entry and exit system of 10, Jamuna Road have been modified to ensure there is no entry or exit from, on/or into the lanes of the northern boundary of 10 Jamuna Road, which lies between house numbers 10 and no 14."
When MiD DAY spoke to the security guard posted outside 10, Jamuna Road, he refuted the allegations. "The lane between the two houses exists for long and it is public. Bahadur family is making false allegations against Pradeep Garg."
A close associate of Pradeep Garg, DS Bali, who said he was authorised to speak for him had earlier told MiD DAY: "We have not tried to break into anyone's house. The gate was always there. It opens to the street, which is not a part of their house. The case is sub-judice."
A senior police official said that the case is sub-judice and they were waiting for the court verdict to take appropriate action.
