Offender has been in custody for over two years after allegedly sexually assaulting five women

He probably thought it was a good idea. But all Umesh Pundir managed was getting a fresh case registered against him. Denied bail for over two years, Umesh Pundir, who was arrested for allegedly raping five women after giving them lift in his autorickshaw, threatened the court staff and metropolitan magistrate that he would get everyone present in court killed, if he wasn't released.
"As the accused, Umesh was brought to Patiala House Court on March 30; he started shouting that if he was not set free by the court, he would get everyone killed. A constable, Dharmpal, who is posted in the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Jitendra Mishra, asked him to keep quiet and let the court start its proceedings but he continued with his threats," said the sources.
"The constable continued to try and pacify him but Umesh didn't relent. He said that his brother-in-law, who was present in court, had seen everyone present and would slaughter everyone if his demands were not met," stated the sources.
The court then sent the culprit back in judicial custody while the constable filed a complaint in this regard at the Tilak Marg Police Station after which a case under sections 186, 189, 506 (2) and 34 of IPC was registered against Umesh.u00a0 Sources added that Umesh is a notorious character and even the five victims, who were allegedly raped by him, didn't appear in court to testify against him. "After seeing his activities, even the court had ordered the police to bring him in fetters at the time of hearing," they said.
A class act
Umesh Pundir was arrested by the Delhi police in December 2008 for allegedly robbing and molesting two passengers in his autorickshaw. On interrogation, he had reportedly confessed to raping five women in the last four to five months. Umesh used to take his female passengers to an isolated stretch near Delhi Ghaziabad Border where he raped them at knifepoint. He then robbed and assaulted them. However, the police had to charge him for robbery and molestation as no victim came forward to register a case against him.
