Pune is all set to become the state's cyber crime fighting hub. The CID force in the city may soon set up a cyber investigation wing that will take up complicated corporate cyber crimes and high-profile cyber cases, which the police have been unable to crack, from all over Maharashtra.
State CID chief S P S Yadav told MiD DAY that the department had sent a proposal to the government, seeking permission to investigate cyber crimes as they have a lot of cyber experts. The government recently asked them to prepare the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), describing how the CID will execute the proposal. As a result, the CID is very optimistic about getting the go ahead very soon.
"We had sent a proposal to the state Home department to allow the CID to set up is own cyber crime investigation wing and probe cases that the police are not able to handle, as we have the expertise and wherewithal. The government has been receptive to the proposal. We are working on the SOP," said Yadav.
Current scenario
At present, all cyber crimes in Maharashtra are handled by the respective cyber cells of an area, which fall under the jurisdiction of the local police commissioners. Though the CID has a cyber cell, its role is limited to training the Maharashtra police in handling cyber crimes and handling statistical data. It does not do any cyber crime investigation nor does it have any authority in such matters.
But now in anticipation, said Yadav, the CID had already procured a sophisticated cyber crime detection software Cybercheck Suit from the Centre for Development of Advance Computing (CDAC).
Other high-end investigation softwares have been sourced from other countries, he added.
The SP of the CID's cyber wing, Dr Sanjay Shinde, said, "We should be handling big cyber crimes, as we have the best experts. We have also requested the government to provide us with 45 computers and more technical
manpower."
