President Pranab Mukherjee's fake Twitter account creates stir, shut down

On Monday afternoon, several Twitterati were 'fooled' into following an account they believed belonged to the President of India, but which turned out to be a fake account.

The virtual world went into a tizzy on Monday after India’s President Pranab Mukherjee reportedly ‘joined’ Twitter.

A fake account of President Pranab Mukherjee on microblogging site 'Twitter' was taken down and the authorities are planning legal action against those responsible for it.u00a0



India’s first citizen joined the social network site with the Twitter handle @POIndia.

The unverified account even followed the official accounts of Presidents of other countries and its bio was penned similar to that of @PMOIndia, which is the verified official account for the Indian Prime Minister.u00a0

Despite it not being a verified account, numerous eminent personalities from politics as well as media jumped the gun to congratulate the President on joining Twitter.

More than 1,000 people, including many influential Indians like cop-turned social activist Kiran Bedi and news anchor Barkha Dutt, followed the account.

The matter was taken up with Twitter and the account was suspeded quickly, they said.u00a0

"A proper inquiry would be conducted into it and the matter may be referred to police," the sources said.

It was a fake account and has been disabled, they said.

Prime Minister's Media Advisor Pankaj Pachuri had put out a tweet informing people about the fake twitter account of the President.u00a0
