Booming population, spiralling number of vehicles and generator sets besides rapid urbanisation has led to an increase in pollution levels in various parts of the country, the Lok Sabha was informed on Wednesday.
He, however said that the interpretation of data from monitoring stations for last three years has revealed that air quality monitored at all locations is within the notified ambient air quality standards with respect to Sulphar Dioxide (SO2) barring a few locations also with respect to Oxides of Nitrogen.
To cover more areas as well ensure accuracy, the government has plans to increase existing 342 monitoring stations to 700 by the end of 11th plan, the minister added.
