some senior Karnataka State Pollution Board Control (KSPBC) officials want employees of IT and software companies to save electricity and value nature this World Environment Day (June 5).

With this mind, the officials plan to send techies tips on environmentally sound living through text messages.

"Employees of IT companies often keep their computers on, even when they are not in use. This indirectly leads to increasing carbon emissions that harm the environment. Through this medium we can broadcast this message to half of Karnataka's population," said an officer from the KSPBC, who added that the proposal is yet to get the nod from higher officials of the board.

Good idea
E-waste recycling experts like P Parathasarathy, managing director of E-parisha, feel educating software employees is the need of the hour.

"We have been conducting road shows and educative programs for school kids and IT professionals on recycling even though they are not our customers. The government should definitely go for this programme as people are unaware of the side effects of gadgets they use daily," explained Parathasarathy.

Environmentalist Leo Saldanha said the KSPBC should concentrate on other pressing issues. "They have a lot to do. Why are they doing such silly things? Their job is to regulate pollution first. This is what they should concentrate on."

Await nod
Mandar Patwardhan, Business Head-Media Networks, SureWaves, the supplier of the technology, said, "We have made the proposal to the KSPBC and are waiting for their nod. Our network reaches around two lakh working individuals aged between 25 to 45 years across the length and breath of India."
