The Crime Branch has arrested six people for posing as police officers and stealing valuables from women.

The six suspects were identified as Javed Manu Irani (25), Javed Hussain Irani (25), Irfan Yasan Irani (37), Haider Naser Irani (22), Zakir Hussain Afsar Ali Irani (37) and Yakub Jansha Irani (42).

The police said the six were arrested from Shivajinagar after a massive combing operation involving 70 policemen led by a team of officers.

They said the men operated as a gang and would con women by posing as police officers and scaring them with stories of murder or other crimes in the vicinity. The conmen would ask the women to remove their jewellery for their safety, offer to wrap them in a handkerchief for them, divert their attention and disappear with the valuables, said the police.

Police Inspectors Sunil Pawar, Bhanupratap Barge, Pratap Pawar, Sunil Deshmukh, Suresh Kekane, Mohan Vidhate, Dattatraya Temghare and Mrudula Karvande led the combing operation that covered all of Shivajinagar, particularly the Mahatma Gandhi Vasahat.

The police said the suspects had committed 10 offences in different parts of the city like Kondhwa, Wanawadi, Deccan, Chatuhshrungi, Yerawada, Vishrambaug and Faraskhana, among others.
