The Guide chatted with Abhijeet Choudhary, founder of Swatantra Theatre Group, about a new play on piracy which shows how money generated from piracy fuels terrorism and plagues the entertainment industry

Among the modern day issues that plague the world is piracy. It has grabbed headlines, and there are events held to raise awareness about the menace but it still rears its ugly head time and again. To add to the efforts, theatre group Swatantra Theatre, are staging a street play titled, Mission Against Piracy.

Director Abhijeet Choudhary states the purpose behind staging the play is to create awareness among masses to stop using pirated DVDs and CDs. Through these street plays, the director wants to inform society not to buy pirated CDs to save the entertainment industry and showcase its connection to terrorism.

"I did a great deal of research for nine months on this topic and came across a lot of information about it. I realised the general public needs to be educated about it and I thought of putting up street plays in the city to convey the message to ordinary people," says Abhijeet. "The irony is that we don't know that we are supporting terrorists and thus killing ourselves, our family, our city, our state, our country and the world," he adds.

The play has a patriotic undertone as well as the organisers consider it as a mission to fight piracy just like Mahatma Gandhi embarked on a mission to fight the Britishers.

The play will be performed to commemorate Swatantra Theatre's anniversary. Last year, Swatantra Theatre had performed plays on swine flu to raise awareness. They will stage the play at colleges, malls and IT companies. Our locations will vary from Bharati Vidyapeeth, Pune University, Fergusson College, Kakde Mall, Congress Bhavan, Vidhushi Infotech and Garware College. "If we get good support from companies or associations, we may even perform all over the country," Abhijeet signs off.
