Delhi government's new diktat to C'wealth contractors

After the Delhi government officials it is now the turn of contractors.

The beleaguered Delhi government in its last ditch bid to meet the deadline for Commonwealth Games projects has threatened the contractors that if they would not be able to hand over the tasks entrusted to them on schedule, they would be blacklisted for all future contracts.

"It is the basic responsibility of a contractor to complete the assigned work relating to Commonwealth Games within the deadline," chief minister Sheila Dikshit said in a high-level meeting of ministers, government officials and contractors.

"Those contractors, who will not be able to fulfill their obligations by August 31, will not only be penalised but also blacklisted," Dikshit added.u00a0

For the past some time Delhi government ministers had been overseeing the progress of road projects in the city. The ministers themselves admitted that the PWD was lagging behind even the MCD, which is often accused of mismanaging the works.

The Delhi government has fixed the date of August 31 to complete all Games-related projects in the city so that road beautification work can be started. The exercise of lane marking on 106 km road length is to be completed within 15 days. By August 10, the contractors and other agencies must also remove the debris from the roads so that beautification work can be carried out.u00a0

The government will hold another meeting to review the progress with contractors after August 10, 2010.

MCD aid
For the cash-strapped MCD, Delhi government has approved release of Rs 1,500 crore. The civic body had demanded a financial assistance of Rs 3,533 crore.
