Cab drivers beat up OC officials over non-payment of dues

It seems that cost-cutting has begun at the lowest level for the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee and with some alarming results. With the Games over and most of the delegates returning to their countries, the cab drivers contracted to ferry athletes and officials went to the Vinay Marg office of the OC to collect their dues.

However, when the officials refused to pay them, they beat up a few of them. Sources in the transport office situated in the ground in front of Nehru Park, from where the movement of these cabs was monitored, became a war front with several reports of OC officials being beaten reaching the Chanakya Puri police station.

Police sources confirmed that on Sunday about half-a-dozen calls pertaining to fighting between OC officials and cab drivers were received. "The drivers had gone there to collect their money, but the organising committee officials allegedly didn't pay them the money promised or made some deductions," a senior police officer said.

Though no cases were registered till Sunday evening, the cops went to the spot on every call and are communicating with OC officials regularly to sort out the problem. "Since we got so many calls, we have called OC officials. Besides, we have deputed policemen there to thwart any untoward incident," the senior officer added.

Another police officer said Organising Committee had hired a few bouncers as they expected such a situation could arise. "These bouncers and other OC officials were reported to have indulged in scuffles with the drivers," the senior police officer stated.

Several calls to OC officials posted at the monitoring rooms ended with the phone being slammed down.

Lane Blues

Facing an acute shortage of drivers after 800 drivers stopped reporting for duty, the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee roped in Blueline bus drivers, apart from school bus drivers, to fill the gap, MiD DAY had reported.
The designated drivers were specifically trained for Games duty. The drivers, however, stopped reporting for duty complaining about long working hours and stale food being served to them. Security personnel were also not allowing them to bring their own food inside the venues.
