Transport department has decided to network all centres across the state, and to keep a check on malpractices.
After the police, it's the Transport Department's turn to crack a whip on erring emission centers.
According to officials, many emission testing centers are lax in following norms. People get emission certificates even though the vehicle doesn't fall under 'Pollution Under Control' (PUC), by simply paying a bribe.
To curb these malpractices, the department has decided to network all centres across the state, and monitor them from the department headquarters.

This new system will be enforced by October end. There are around 450 testing centers across Karnataka, out of which 280 are in Bangalore. Once a vehicle is tested, the emission values will be sent to the headquarters and the clearance will be given to print the PUC only if the values match the standard values.
Also, once a vehicle is taken to a center, mobile numbers of the vehicle owners will be recorded. After the networking of these centers a centralised data of vehicles will be collected and the Transport department will issue notices to those who have not undergone the periodical test and will be asked to pay a fine.

Joint Commissioner for Transport (E-governance and Environment) L Hemantha Kumara said, "The networking of emission testing centers will be launched in another 15 days, and the rest of the state will be networked in another 45 days. The state-owned Karnataka State Electronics Development Corporation Limited has taken up the job and are implementing it successfully. We have selected 10 emission centers in Bangalore for a trial run.
For now, an SMS integration program is going on. We will have the emission details of each vehicle plying on roads. This will help a lot to keep a tab on the growing pollution and also misuse of emission certificates."
The Central Crime Branch had raided a few testing centers in the city, and had arrested eight persons for issuing fake certificates.u00a0
"We want to regulate the method of issuing of certificates and want to know if the centers are actually following guidelines. We have come across many centers issuing certificates without checking vehicles even though their emission levels are high," said D Vijaya Vikram, Joint Commissioner for Transport (Enforcement-South).
