NGO members tied rakhis to inmates on Raksha Bandhan. All prisoners, except those on death row, were allowed to mingle
Members of 13 NGOs and various Ganesh mandals came together to organise a rakhi ceremony in Yerawada jail yesterday for all prisoners, barring those convicted of heinous crimes. Twenty girl students and 12 members of Savitri Mahila Udyog Sanstha were allowed inside the jail, so they could tie rakhis to the inmates after they were frisked at the gate.
Said Acting Jail Superintendent A G Bhailume, "Barring 30 inmates who have been awarded the death sentence, including 20 convicts of the 1993 bomb blasts, all others who showed willingness to celebrate Raksha Bandhan were allowed to participate in the function. The prisoners were extremely happy."
No photographs
Unfortunately, Yerwada jail authorities did allow photographers to enter the jail premises with their cameras.u00a0u00a0 Sangita Tiwari local Congress leader who donate books every year on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan had a tiny scuffle with jail authorities after they refused to let photographers inside the jail.
Tiwari said, "I told them that this is the 12th year that we will celebrate Raksha Bandhan in Yerwada jail. I told them that I would not donate books if they did not allow photographers inside,"u00a0 said Tiwari.
Assistant Jail Supritendent M S Nighot relented and allowed the to click one picture while donating books inside his cabin. She added, "Due to security concerns, we were asked to submit our belongings to the office. Even handkerchiefs, sugar and pedhas were not allowed inside the jail premises."
