The city's first two-day tattoo convention will tell you why tattoos are a work of art, and give you access to some of the best tattoo artistes from around the country, from Nepal's Mohan Gorang to Abhinandan Das from KolkataIf LA Ink is your way of vicariously living the life of a tattooed free spirit, that's about to change. Next weekend India's first-ever tattoo convention, The Indian Ink Tattoo Expo 2011, will take centrestage at the World Trade Centre, giving you the chance to clear all your doubts about tattooing and maybe even take the plunge and get one yourself.
Shibanii Shah, Proprieter, Eventos Promotions and More, feels the time is right for an event of this kind. "Tattoo conventions take place all over the world. Three out of five Indians either have a tattoo or want to get one. The market here is huge," says the tattoo enthusiast.
It was when the 24 year-old began researching after reading about the Nepal Tattoo Convention that she realised how little Indians know about the wealth of talent in their own country. "Mumbai itself has more than 800 super-talented tattoo artistes. Delhi has over a 1,000. Yet, search engines and the Yellow Pages throw up only a few common names. This despite there being a massive market for tattoos in India."
The convention will aim to remedy that. "When I got my first tattoo, my mother looked at me in disbelief, upset that I was turning into a 'junkie'. That's the attitude I want to bust. Tattoos are art too, and drug peddlers and hippies aren't the only ones with them."
Twenty five booths will host well-known tattoo artistes from across the country, as well as Mohan Gorang from Nepal and Johnny from Singapore, both well-respected.
A competition to judge the best colour and best black-and-white tattoo is also on the cards. "And if you have any questions or are unsure about getting a tattoo yourself, you can throw a couple of questions to the artistes at the Q and A session. They are all very friendly and approachable," Shah says, getting ready to get herself inked for the second time.
And if all you want to do is have a good time, walk in to listen to some bands perform, watch B-boying, and generally educate yourself about an often-misunderstood profession.
