Monsoon menace,MiD DAY Campaign: Week 5,Day 4

Water-logging on Mangal Das Road makes it difficult for motorists to park vehicles

Pedestrians find it difficult to walk on Mangal Das Road, as a couple of spots here are submerged under water when it rains heavily. This particular area houses some posh residential and official complexes including Connaught Place. Also, the road leads to Koregaon Park, one of the posh areas in the city.

Those working at the offices here maintain that problem occurs only during monsoon, and water-logging near the parking areas makes its difficult to park vehicles.

People find it difficult to walk on the opposite side of road because water collects near the pavements. As the area is close to Wadia College, students walk down on the road to the snacks stalls near the bus stand. But during monsoons they avoid it fearing that speeding vehicles will splash water on them.

There are a couple of canal passages, which are tightly closed making it difficult for water to pass. The entire stretch has only one storm water drain, which could be a reason for water-logging.

Problem:
This particular area is prone to water-logging each time it rains. The gap between the parking area and the main road is filled with water. The outdoor parking is at a low level making it difficult for water to flow into the storm water drain that is located at a higher level. The canals are built a little far away and its passages are also blocked. There is no room for water to flow. It takes a couple of days for the water to drain even after it has stopped raining.

PMC's promise: As opening the lids of the canals and cleaning them could take a long time, engineers said the problem could be solved by doing patchwork between the road and the parking areas. They also said cleaning the grills of storm water drains could also solve half the problem.

Problem: There are no storm drains in and around the area leading to water logging at every opportunity. As it's in front of the signal, it's a busy spot with vehicles zooming in and out. The condition of the road just near the pavement is not up to the mark. There are small pot-holes around which adds to the woes of commuters. Those walking on the pavement admit that walking during monsoon is an issue as speeding vehicles splash water on them. Those who stop on the signals have to step on muddy water.
PMC's promise: A canal has to be made here and for the time being the nearby canals have to be cleaned so that water flows into them easily. The sides of the roads are broken and needs be repaired so that water does not collect.
