The much-awaited Delhi-Gurgaon line is finally on track as the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is likely to flag off the corridor in just one phase instead of two, as planned earlier.u00a0u00a0u00a0
In January, DMRC had started trial runs on the HUDA City Centre in Gurgaon and Sultanpur in Delhi. But even after the trial runs, the stretch was not thrown open for the public.
"If the corridor is opened in two phases, the purpose will not be served. The commuters travelling to Gurgaon will only be able to board the Metro from Sultanpur and the commuters from the satellite city can only reach till Sultanpur," added the official.
While the stretch from Central Secretariat to Qutub Minar that has nine stations will be completely underground, the stretch connecting Qutub Minar-HUDA City Centre to Gurgaon will be fully elevated. This stretch comprises 10 stations.
"Most of the work is complete across the corridor. Due to land acquisition problem near Sultanpur, the construction work got delayed," added the official. Once the Metro line to Gurgaon is opened, passengers can hope to reach the Millennium City in an hour from Connaught Place.
It takes more than 90 minutes to reach Gurgaon and during peak hours it can take more than two hours. Once the stretch becomes operational, the Jahangirpuri-Central Secretariat line-Gurgaon Line will be around 42 km and the distance will be covered in less than 90 minutes.
The Central Secretariat-HUDA City Centre line, built at a total cost of Rs 3,720 crore, is expected to add over 3.4 lakh people to the Metro system by 2011. After the Gurgaon line, DMRC will have only two lines to complete before the Commonwealth Games in October. They are the Central Secretariat-Badarpur and New Delhi-Airport Express Line. Delhi Metro last week also opened the Inderlok Mundka Line, which connects Mundka with Dwarka-Noida line on Inderlok Metro station.
