The traffic nightmare in the Sampige road neighbourhood, which houses India's largest mall, is getting worse

India's largest mall 'Mantri Square' that opened in Bangalore recently has resulted in the traffic going from bad to worse.

The civic body is also being blamed for bad planning, which has contributed to the problem.

This despite the fact that the builder has donated around 5 acres of land for the metro station, which is expected to compound the already severe road traffic snarls in the area.

He has asked to remove the BMTC bus stop at the Sampige road junction (at Rajiv Gandhi Park) that has become an obstacle for the smooth flow of traffic.

"How can a bus stand be erected in the middle of the road? The area of the park has to be reduced as well. I have suggested that a subway be constructed for the pedestrians in front of the mall.

Also, there are eight huge trees opposite the mall on either side of the road that have to be removed and replanted elsewhere," said Sreehari.

He added, "This is India's biggest mall. It stands at around 4-lakh sq ft and is visited by thousands of people. The mall requires parking facility for 2,500 cars. All it can accommodate is 1,500."

A new separate 800 metre four-lane road is being proposed from the metro station and the Mantri Square to ease traffic.

The BBMP has also agreed to use the road exclusively for the Metro station and Mantri Square.

BBMP Chief Engineer B T Ramesh said, "A new 60-feet road is being constructed from the Rajiv Gandhi statue to a spot behind Mantri Square.

It connects Srirampuram and Malleswaram. Mantri developers have invested Rs 3.5 crore for this project. The four-lane road will be completed in one month's time.

Then the traffic on Sampige road will come down by 50 per cent."
