A MAN allegedly murdered his wife before committing suicide, after three decades of suspecting her of cheating on him.
The incident, which the police said took place at Sant Tukaram Nagar in Bhosari, came to light late in the evening on Saturday. The dead man was identified as Suresh Anna Vasekar (56), and the woman as his wife Shaila (48).
The Bhosari police lodged a murder case against Suresh after his son Nitin (23) filed a complaint.
Suresh, who was from Baramati, had three children and was employed at a private company in Bhosari. Shaila was also working at a company for more than 20 years. Their eldest daughter got married a couple of years ago, while one of their sons was working in the Sinhagad Institute. The youngest son Nitin is studying in a college.
Police Inspector Sudhir Aspat said, "Suresh suspected Shaila of cheating on him since they were married. They used to fight with each other over this. Their children and neighbours had to often intervene to prevent the situation from going out of hand."
The couple had a bitter fight on Friday night, which was resolved after the neighbours intervened. On Saturday evening, Nitin had gone to the gym and returned home around 8pm, but found both doors of the house locked.
"When Nitin broke the windowpanes at the back of the house, he saw his father hanging from the ceiling. He shouted for help, after which their neighbours brought a carpenter and broke open the door. Nitin was shocked to see his mother also lying in a pool of blood," said Aspat. "Though Suresh suspected his wife, our investigation has not thrown up evidence of her having illicit relations."
