Man held for raping 9-year-old daughter, sexually abusing son

The Kothrud police yesterday arrested a man for allegedly raping his nine-year-oldu00a0daughter and sexually abusing his 12-year-old son.u00a0

The incident came to light when the boy broke down in front of his friend's elder sister, Sharda, who runs a beauty parlour in Karve Nagar. The accused, Jaykumar Kailash Gedam works at a meat shop named Bharat Chicken Centre, located close to Sharda's beauty parlour. The two children often went there to play.u00a0

On December 22, the girl complained to her brother about the alleged rape that took place a day before. That day, the boy requested Sharda to keep his sister in her custody fearing that the father would beat her up. The girl said that her father, promising to buy heru00a0footwear, had taken her to a secluded spot near the Mrutyuneshwar Mandir in Karve Nagar and raped her under a bridge.u00a0

The siblings said that their father would beat them up every now and then. Theu00a0girl also told Sharda thatu00a0

she was earlier raped by her father when she was staying at her aunty's place, while the boy said that he was sexually abused by the father at several occasions. u00a0

The complaint was first filed at the Warje police station and later transferred to the Kothrud station since the place of the crime falls under the latter'su00a0jurisdiction.

Assistant Police Inspector S D Deshmukh said that the accused is currently in police custody and they were yet to question the children about the details of the incident. "We have booked Gedam under section 376, 377 and 406 of the Indian Penal Code and we will take a detailed statement from Sharda." The police said Gedam was a habitual drinker and his wife had died one year ago.u00a0
